About the Margelisch brand

Margelisch Rucksack

Fair production

The Margelisch label ensures that the employees (no children) are paid fairly for the work they do. Fair production includes adequate remuneration of the staff, a negotiated price that covers the production costs and thus provides a long-term income. It also includes long-term production guarantees for the producer.

Margelisch promotes economic stability in the manufactories in Calcutta (India) by pre-financing 65% of the production costs. This security they offer to the producers enables them to provide wage security for employees. Margelisch thus takes full responsibility of the production orders by pre-financing 100% of the production before the goods are shipped.

Through regular, friendly exchanges with their producers and their production monitoring, they are able to influence production standards themselves and directly.

Sustainability

Margelisch develops and produces articles with the claim of sustainable action in the entire value chain. In doing so, they assume responsibility in their actions and carefully examine the effects this has on people and the environment.

All production materials are selected on the basis of predefined criteria, so that only components are used that meet the ideas in relation to this responsibility.

Cotton: Organic cotton is deliberately used as lining material for all backpack and bag models. This is because the natural fibre is a renewable raw material, can be recycled and is therefore sustainable. For the canvas models, cotton is also used as the outer material. By applying a fine layer of wax, the canvas becomes water-repellent.

Leather: Vegetable-tanned and dyed leather is used for all backpack and bag models as well as the wallets. This leather is thus traditionally tanned and dyed without chemical additives. It is therefore chrome-free and protects people and the environment.

Margelisch goes one step further in the new 2021 collection and does not use any nylon or PVC.

In addition, Margelisch articles reach the EU by sea in container ships from India. This deliberately chosen transport route allows CO2 to be reduced. This is because the emission by sea freight is 35 grams per 1000 kilometres, in contrast to air freight, which is 1000 grams per kilogram of goods per 1000 kilometres.

Furthermore, only used cardboard boxes are used for shipping Margelisch products.

Upcycling

Discarded sofas form the basis for Margelisch purses, which are used to make sustainable RFID signal-blocking leather purses.

This is because discarded leather sofas leave a high CO2 footprint even after their demise, as they are not recycled by type but burned as a whole. This means that an enormous amount of energy is used, from production to destruction.
